Summary
Hiker completed a Balsam Mountain–Rider Hollow counterclockwise loop in Sunday conditions with 2–3 inches of snow and microspikes, noting that recent rain and warming had melted heavier snowfall from the previous week. The Rider Hollow shelter was encountered in poor condition with roof damage.

Sunday. A quick hike done counterclockwise. Two to three inches of snow. Combination of boots and hillsounds. My buddy was hiking Fox Hollow the previous Saturday and says he was in 24 inches of snow with deeper drifts. Well, I was less fortunate because I left the snow shoes in the trunk. The rain and warming temps completely wiped that out. Rider Hollow shelter was closed as it looked like it was in bad shape with a hole in the roof. Three and a half hours. Short and sweet. Merry Christmas to all
