Summary
Hiker encountered solid ice on the herd path and off-trail sections while climbing Vly, discovering that heavy trail usage creates packed paths even without cars at the trailhead. Spikes would have been essential; snowshoes were unnecessary and the hiker nearly slid down during descent.

Thought I might need SS on the bushwhack so I wore them up the road and left the spikes behind. Big mistake! The herd path was solid ice in places and off trail was not much better. The only thing that stopped a butt slide on the way down was a tree. in these days of heavy trail usage, even if there are no cars at the trailhead assume there will be a packed down path.
