Summary

A group of 10 hikers ascended Round Mountain and Kaaterskill High Peak on February 26, 2022, following recent snowfall of 6-8 inches. Snowshoes were required throughout, and icy conditions on the descent required web assistance in one sketchy spot; previous warmups had largely melted the earlier snowpack.

A 3500 footer club led by Mike D had 10 of us going in from Gillespie Road. We parked at the winter lot and hiked to the summer lot. The start had us enjoying some old roads(logging?) but soon enough we were battling through the bushwhack! We all enjoyed Friday’s snowfall of about 6 to 8 inches but it seemed like most of the previous snowpack was gone due to previous warmups. We wore snowshoes all day. No water crossings to worry about. Coming down the back side of Round to the col we had some sketchy spots and had to lay out some webbing in one spot for the second half of our group after the first half scraped away all the snow to reveal the ice beneath. at the summit and we reminisced about the fun times on the Forum. Spectacular views from the Hurricane Ledge. I was limping out at the end but we started with ten and finished with the same ten with our sweeper Ron keeping a watchful eye! As we packed up to go a couple of bus loads of young adults pulled up in buses and got off with orange sleds and hiked up to sled the old ski slope. Now there’s something you don’t see every day! It was another great day to be out there!
