ADK High Peaks Conditions Report for June 26 weekend forecasting variable conditions with showers and thunderstorms likely Friday, clearing Saturday-Sunday, summits around 55°F with winds to 25 mph. Multiple closures reported including Avalanche Pass Trail, various road and facility maintenance notices.

DEC and Trout Unlimited announced a multi-phase culvert replacement project in the Moose River Plains Complex (Herkimer and Hamilton counties) beginning June 15, 2026. The project will replace over 50 culverts to reconnect 43 miles of brook trout habitat; initial phase focuses on Limekiln Lake–Cedar River Road with closures of Cedar River Flow Headquarters to Campsite 20 through July 3.

Dover Stone Church has been closed to public access via the previously-allowed private driveway following a court decision. An alternate route via a trail behind the fire department is available.

DEC announces temporary closure of Hamlin Marsh Wildlife Management Area trail in Onondaga County following fire damage to a boardwalk and viewing blind on May 13. Trail will reopen after debris cleanup and investigation completion, expected in a few days.

Temporary trail reroutes in Bear Mountain State Park due to construction between the parking area and trailheads, expected to continue until summer 2027. Detours posted around Hessian Lake with alternative routing options provided.

A section of the Highlands Trail in Byram, New Jersey will be closed from July 2026 to July 2027 for EPA cleanup work at the Mansfield Dump Superfund site. No detour is planned; hikers are advised not to trespass and to either bypass the section or wait for reopening.

Breakneck Ridge, Wilkinson Memorial, and Lower Brook trailheads in the Hudson Highlands remain closed until mid-2027 due to the Breakneck Connector and Bridge construction project that began in April 2025.

DEC is closing seasonal access roads and gates in upstate New York regions due to spring mud season and damage from motor vehicle use. High water and muddy trail conditions present hazards for backcountry recreation, and a Recreational Use Advisory remains in effect.

A wildfire in the Newark Watershed near West Milford, New Jersey has closed Clinton Road and multiple trailheads (P1N–P7) serving Newark Watershed and Wawayanda State Park. As of October 10, 2025, trailheads P3 and P4 West remain closed, while the Bearfort Waters Clinton/Highlands Trail co-alignment is unaffected.

The Avalanche Pass Trail has been closed indefinitely following a major landslide triggered by intense rainfall in mid-July that destroyed the trail corridor between Lake Arnold and Avalanche Lake. Multiple peaks accessed via this route (Algonquin, Colden, Marcy, Skylight, Gray) are no longer accessible via their typical loop routes, though some remain accessible as out-and-back hikes.

Sterling Forest State Park in New York has multiple trail closures due to the November 2024 Jennings Creek Wildfire; closures include portions of Bear Rock, Fire Tower, Lake to Lake, Sterling Ridge, West Valley, and Highlands trails and will remain in effect until further notice. Doubletop and Graham mountains in the Catskills have been permanently closed to public hiking access as of March 22, 2021. The Catskill 3500 Club removed these peaks from their official list, reducing the list from 35 to 33 peaks, and will not accept substitution peaks after this date.

The Goodman Mountain trail in the Horseshoe Lake Wild Forest near Tupper Lake is temporarily closed by NYS DEC due to an extended presence of a bull moose in the area. The trail is normally a gradual family-friendly hike with good views from the open summit.
